Craniosacral Therapy for Babies and Children
Babies and children are generally very responsive to Craniosacral Therapy (CST) and enjoy its gentle, nurturing approach. As CST does not use any physical manipulation, pressure or force of any kind, it is extremely safe to use for all ages and states of health, including at such sensitive times as pregnancy and childbirth. CST is very useful after accidents and surgery, and during periods of emotional upset or illness. Newly born babes can particularly benefit from CST.
Indeed, pregnancy and childbirth are major transitions for both parents and child. It can be a joyful and magical time of creation, connection and exploration, yet can also be confusing, painful, and physically and emotionally complicated. Immense forces are at play, and if left unresolved these can have a lasting impact on the health and well-being of the little one through out life. CST offers support for the whole family, helping to alleviate distress and discomfort, and assisting the resolution of a wide variety of issues.
Even during a healthy ‘natural birth’ the baby’s soft skull has experienced intense pressure, which can also lead to compressed glands, nerves and blood vessels within the brain and spine. This may result in various symptoms such as distress, colic, and difficulty sleeping. Caesarian births can also be very challenging for the little one, and may result in serious complications such as shock and overwhelm. For more information regarding the potential impacts and significance of pregnancy, birth and our early experiences, please refer to the section on Pre- and Peri-natal Experience.
Sometimes these issues can resolve themselves within the context of a safe, caring family environment and healthy attachment with the mother and father. Babies are very sensitive beings, but also highly resilient, and respond amazingly well when simply loved and received. However, often this just isn’t enough, and help is required for a variety of reasons. This is when I hope to be of assistance.
To give you an idea of the scope of CST with regard to babies and toddlers, many parents have reported that CST has brought about relief from the following issues:
- Colic and digestive issues
- Difficulty settling and disturbed sleep
- Irritability and restlessness
- Difficulties with feeding
- Bonding and relational issues
However, I would like to emphasise that I do not claim to ‘cure’ any of the above. CST is not intended as primary healthcare, but rather to work alongside the relationship you have with your doctor.
